Arterial Stiffness Index (ASI)

A new measurement of Arteriosclerosis

At last there is available a non-invasive, inexpensive, reliable method to get an estimate of how much our arteries have become stiff and hardened.  The Waters Integrative Health Center has acquired a Cardiovision Arterial Stiffness monitoring device.  This computerized machine takes 6,000 readings at a blood pressure cuff on the upper arm and processes the data to come up with an estimate of how hard or sclerotic a person’s arteries have become.

It is important to know how flexible the arteries are because this measurement has been shown to correlate strongly with the presence of coronary artery disease.  The stiffer the arteries, the harder the heart has to work and the more long-term damage it will sustain.

A recent published study by our colleague L. Terry Chappell, M.D. at his Chelation Therapy clinic in Ohio revealed that, of patients with elevated arterial stiffness indices, there was an average of 42.5% improvement in arterial elasticity after 30 Chelation Therapy treatments.  Only 1 out of 13 patients with pre-chelation evidence of increased stiffness showed no reduction in stiffness.  Even that patient improved clinically (reduced symptoms of arteriosclerosis).

In addition to the ASI obtained with the Cardiovision device, your risk factor data (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, etc.) will be analyzed using the famous Framingham Risk analysis program.  This data will tell you your risk of having a “Coronary Artery Event” over the next 10 years.

All this valuable information will allow us to better advise you on diet, lifestyle, supplements, etc. to minimize your risk of having a heart attack.  All new Chelation Therapy patients should have the ASI and Framingham Risk Factor Analysis on their second visit to the clinic.  The fee for the tests is $75.00 and will be repeated after 30 Chelation treatments.  We also encourage non-chelation patients to undergo these tests as a screening maneuver.  Even though you may be coming to our clinic for arthritis or some other problem, it is valuable to know to what extent your arteries are becoming stiff and arteriosclerotic.
